It is true that there is nearly always, in every culture and period of history, a generation gap – some differences between parents and their children. However, people in any generation are human, so the similarities in behaviour across generations are greater than the differences. In addition, people from different generations who are living in the same culture share so many basic ideas about the world, and about what matters and what doesn’t. Different generations can learn from each other. On the one hand, older people have a lot of experience and knowledge that they can share with younger people. Elderly people, in particular, can teach young people important lessons learnt during their many more years of living than their children and grandchildren. They can also give advice on how to face challenges. On the other hand, younger people can teach older people about modern life. They are growing up in a world that is extremely different even from the one that their parents experienced. They have an understanding of new technology, such as the internet and social media, which often causes older generations some difficulties. If parents ask for advice about these things, the conversations can lead to better relationships at home and greater respect for their teenager’s knowledge. Respect is the key thing to remember when we try to bridge the generation gap. Parents must respect their children’s privacy, particularly when they become teenagers. They must also respect their point of view on certain issues, even if they feel differently. In turn, teenagers must respect their parents, even when they don’t give them permission to do something, such as hanging out with friends late at night. Parents have to look after their children, and their knowledge of the problems of the world is greater because of the more years which they have lived. Question 1.
