Ever since the 19th century, when people were developing different ways of creating electricity, companies have looked for improved ways of producing power, using cleaner and more efficient methods. Now a UK company called Pavegen has been working on technology that could be widely used in the future to produce electricity. (24) _________. The company has developed a special type of floor, made of square tiles. Underneath each square, there’s a system that can produce a certain amount of electricity very cheaply – from the energy created every time someone steps on it! The creator of the floor, Laurence Kemball-Cook, came up with the idea when he was a student, and did some work experience with an energy company. The company asked him to investigate ways of providing street lighting in city centers, using energy from the sun to produce electricity. (25) _________. One reason was that many city centers don’t get enough sunlight, because of all the tall buildings. Then he thought of a better plan. Why not use the energy created by pedestrians instead? The right technology could be used to convert this energy into electricity – right under people’s feet! The design of the floor is actually extremely effective. (26) _________. And the reason is that a lot of energy is produced simply because of the large numbers of people walking across the floor. In fact, the special squares are already in place in several locations with high numbers of pedestrians. These include big department stores and also an airport. A. This kind of information is very useful for certain people. B. And it’s actually based on a simple idea. TA10-HK1-2023.2024 2 CODE A

When you ask more people about the benefits of apps on their smartphone, they say they use them to play games, surf the net, keep in touch with people and organize social events. But Jenny Harlow, a scientist from London, has got an app that does something much more important: it warns her when she is in danger. The app is called Safety Tips and it gives users real-time earthquake and tsunami warnings. The Japan Tourist Agency had the idea for the app after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, when many foreign tourists in the country were confused about what was happening and what they should do. Jenny was on a business trip to Japan when the earthquake struck. ‘Although there are a lot of earthquakes in Japan, it was the first time I experienced one. All the warnings and information on the internet, radio and TV were in Japanese, and I couldn’t understand. It was really confusing and I didn’t know what to do.’ She had to rely on Japanese colleagues to help her. The Safety Tips app sends an alert to users when a major earthquake happens, and also tells them if a tsunami is likely to arrive at the coast. The app gives lots of tips about what to do, where to go and how to stay safe, as well as a list of useful Japanese phrases such as ‘Is this an earthquake?’ and ‘Is it safe here?’. Importantly, all the information is in English, and there are plans to add other languages. The Japan Tourist Agency plans to advertise the app at airports and tourist information centers in Japan. In order to get the app, people visit a website and download it. ‘I’m coming to Japan again next year and I will definitely watch out for alerts from the app,’ says Jenny. 27. According to the text, most people __________ A. don’t value apps very highly. B. don’t know what the main benefits of apps are. C. use apps mainly for fun and social situations. D. think apps are useless in dangerous situations. 28. The word ‘one’ in paragraph 1 refers to __________ A. a warning B. an earthquake C. a business trip D. an app 29. Jenny had problems because __________ A. no one told her what to do after an earthquake. B. she couldn’t understand the notice on the media. C. there was no information about what to do in an earthquake. D. her Japanese colleagues didn’t know what to do. 30. At the moment, the app __________ A. is available in a number of languages.
