Changes mainly appear at the wound due to chronic inflammation and cell hyperplasia, which leads to cancer.

Fibroblasts play a critical role in chronic inflammation and wound healing. In this study, a fibroblast growth-stimulating factor was purified from the exudate of car-rageenan-induced inflammation in rats. The purified protein was a disulfide-linked homodimer. Amino acid sequence analysis of the peptides generated by cleavage with cyanogen bromide and proteinase V8 resulted in identification of the protein as S100A9. Recombinant S100A9 as well as its disulfide-linked homodimer stimu-lated the proliferation of fibroblasts at a similar con-centration of the purified protein. ...

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major clinical disorder usually associated with cigarette smoking. A central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is inflammation coexisting with an abnormal protease/anti-protease balance, leading to apoptosis and elastolysis. In anin vitro study of rat lung alveolar L2 cells, cigarette smoke extract (CSE) induced apoptotic cell death. Expo-sure of L2 cells to CSE at a concentration of 0.25% resulted in a 50% increase of caspase-3 and matrix met-alloproteinase (MMP) activities.

Current evidence suggests that the beneficial effects of statins seem to be mediated not only by their lipid-lowering properties but also by improving vascular endothelial cell function. Chronic inhibition of endothelial nitric oxide synthesis by oral administration of Nw-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) to rats induces early vascular inflammation and subsequent arteriosclerosis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a multifactorial disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints. Both genetic and environmental factors are involved in the pathogenesis leading to joint destruction and ultimately dis-ability. In the inflamed RA joint the synovium is highly infiltrated by CD4 + T cells, B cells and macrophages, and the intimal lining becomes hyperplastic owing to the increased number of macrophage-like and fibro-blast-like synoviocytes.

Background: Dercum’s disease (DD) is characterised by obesity and chronic pain ( 3 months) in the adipose tissue. The pathogenesis of DD is unknown, but inflammatory components have been proposed. In previous reports and studies, an inconsistent picture of the histological appearance of the adipose tissue in DD has been described. The aim of this investigation was to examine the histological appearance of adipose tissue in patients with DD, with particular focus on inflammatory signs. Methods: Fat biopsies were sampled from painful regions from 53 patients with DD.
