Schistosomes are parasitic flatworms that infect millions of people in (sub)tropical areas around the world. Glycoconjugates of schistosomes play a critical role in the interaction of the different developmental stages of the parasite with the host. The zinc-finger cellular nucleic acid binding protein (CNBP) is a strikingly conserved single-stranded nucleic acid binding protein essential for normal forebrain formation during mouse and chick embryogenesis. DNA methylation affects important developmental processes in both plants and animals. The process of methylation of cytosines at C-5 is catalysed by DNA methyltransferases (MTases), which are highly conserved, both struc-turally and functionally, in eukaryotes. In this study, we identified and characterized cytosine DNA MTase genes that are activated with the onset of reproductive development in rice.

Follistatin-related protein (FRP)⁄follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) is a member of the follistatin protein family, all of which share a characteristic structure unit found in follistatin, called the FS domain. Developmental studies have suggested that FRP regulates organ tissue formation in embryos. Immunological studies showed that FRP modifies joint inflammation in arthritic disease, and modu-lates allograft tolerance.

Eukaryotic cells have to regulate peroxisomal metabolism to meet their environmental or developmental requirements. Therefore, the control of peroxisome number, which is mediated not only by proliferation but also by degradation, is an important cellular event. Here we briefly review stud-ies on the autophagic degradation of peroxisomes, a process now termed pexophagy.
