  • This project is an investigation of melodic drum-kit practices in popular and contemporary music. The development of melodic drum-kit playing techniques has helped create a more inclusive role for drum-kit players within ensembles and has increased the potential for drum-kit players to present solo elements in performance. The project artefacts of my research are six compositions presented on CD. They demonstrate performance and compositional techniques that encourage a melodic approach to drum-kit performance.

  • This study focuses on experimental testing and subsequent numerical analysis of impacted and pre-loaded composite coupons and bonded composite scarf joints under varying impact conditions. A methodology will be developed for the numerical modelling of preloaded impact tests to enable capture of critical failure modes and ultimate failure. The main aim is to validate a modelling strategy that will provide accurate failure characterisation of the tested joints using numerical analysis.

  • The aim of this Master of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis is to study the structural response and failure of aerospace grade composites during exposure to fire. Key aspects of the research are to analyse the thermal and mechanical responses of laminates and sandwich composites in high temperature and fire environments, which result in softening and structural failure. The research is concentrated on carbon/epoxy laminates and sandwich composites, which are the most common composite materials used in aerospace structures.

  • The aim of the research was the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams acquired with the help of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired for damage detection. The displacement mode shapes acquired were then converted into curvature mode shapes with the help of a Central Difference Approximation method (CDA).

  • This research project investigates the relationship between music composition, particularly electronic pop, and sound design (the editing/mixing of sound for cinema), with its main focus on Multi-channel (Surround Sound) techniques. It proposes new practices that extend music compositional tools into embracing spatial techniques employed by sound design. My research encompasses both the conceptual development (ie spatial techniques in creating narratives) and the practical issues relating to the production and technology needed for such works.

  • The main aim of this study is to investigate utilising root-like architectures to improve the interfacial strength of pin-integrated hybrid composite-metal structures. Joints are critical elements in aircraft structures and require special consideration due to their vital role in the structural integrity of airframes. Although bonded and bolted systems are used commonly in engineering applications, pinning technologies have shown tremendous potential for hybrid joints.

  • The project's main objectives were to analyse the data obtained during geological exploration and use it to model and predict biological patterns in order to answer the main research questions: 1) Is there a statistical relationship between the environmental parameters and the benthic community composition and morphospecies observed? 2) Can predictive models be developed from this relationship? In achieving these main objectives, the project also developed recommendations for methods that could be applied during geological exploration voyages to maximise the potential use of data collected.

  • The objective of this project was to develop \(Ti{O_2}\) based multifunctional substrates through silver decoration, while simultaneously enhancing the photocatalytic performance of \(Ti{O_2}\) in the substrate. Employing Ag nanoparticles introduced additional functionality to the system, namely surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), thus enabling the detection of trace amounts of organic molecules prior to their degradation, all with the same substrate.

  • This research examines how parametric loudspeakers may be considered unique acousmatic musical instruments; how the parametric acoustic array (PAA) can potentially make new forms of music and listening experiences; and how PAA-design problems can be overcome. Interdisciplinary in nature, the study uses grounded theory and experimental music practice within a design research methodology. Theory emerges from data, in concert with analysis and framing that draws on areas such as electroacoustic music, spatial composition, acoustics, PAA science/theory, modulation theory, and medium theory.

  • This thesis has two key results, a study on the effect of carbon in electron-beam deposited platinum nano-wires and a novel temperature sensing glass substrate for marker-free thermometry. The thesis focus on the effect of carbon contamination in plasmonic nano-wires composed mainly of platinum produced from FEBID. Because carbon acts as an insulator in the platinum/carbon composite, we model the effect of carbon impurities by reducing the charge carrier concentration inthe platinumwire.
