The aim of this study is to enhance biogas production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and garden waste (GW) via pretreatment and codigestion. In order to achieve the aims of the study, two objectives have been developed and are outlined below: To investigate an optimum co-digestion mixture of OFMSW with untreated and pretreated GW; to investigate the effectiveness of different pretreatments on the potential for biogas production from GW and to identify the relationship between certain changes in GW characteristics and enhanced yield.

The structure of the O-polysaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide from a diarrheal strain isolated in Bangladesh was studied with sugar, and methylation analysis, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and partial acid hydrolysis. The expression of mitochondrial and hydrogenosomal ADP/ATP carriers (AACs) from plants, rat and the anaerobic chytridiomycete fungus Neocallimastix spec. L2 in Escherichia coli allows a functional integration of the recombinant proteins into the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. For AAC1 and AAC2 from rat, apparent Km values of about 40 lM for ADP, and 105 lM or 140 lM, respectively, for ATP have been determined, similar to the data reported for isolated rat mitochondria.

The multicopper oxidase from the hyperthermophilic archaeonPyrobacu-lum aerophilum (McoP) was overproduced in Escherichia coliand purified to homogeneity. The enzyme consists of a single 49.6 kDa subunit, and the combined results of UV–visible, CD, EPR and resonance Raman spectroscopies showed the characteristic features of the multicopper oxidases. Analysis of the McoP sequence allowed its structure to be derived by comparative modeling methods.
