Epidemiologic features

objectives: To describe the epidemiologically clinical and biological characteristics of steroid - dependent and steroid - resistant INS in children at the Hai Phong Children’s Hospital. To evaluate the efficacy of the combination of intravenous cyclophosphamide and prednisolone in treatment of steroid - dependent and steroid - resistant INS in children. To describe changes in several immune parameters before and after treatment in these patients.

Diagnosis A diagnosis of botulism must be considered in patients with symmetric descending paralysis who are afebrile and mentally intact. The bulbar musculature is involved initially, but sensory findings are absent and, early on, deep tendon reflexes remain intact. The differential diagnosis of botulism and distinguishing features are listed in Table 134-2. Depending on season and other epidemiologic factors, West Nile virus infection may also be a consideration.

Renal Cell Carcinoma Renal cell carcinomas account for 90–95% of malignant neoplasms arising from the kidney. Notable features include resistance to cytotoxic agents, infrequent responses to biologic response modifiers such as interleukin (IL) 2, and a variable clinical course for patients with metastatic disease, including anecdotal reports of spontaneous regression. Epidemiology The incidence of renal cell carcinoma continues to rise and is now nearly 51,000 cases annually in the United States, resulting in 13,000 deaths. The male to female ratio is 2:1.
