Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is affecting approximately 24% of individuals and potentially leading to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This study aims to assess the prevalence of MAFLD in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and analyze their clinical characteristics.

Certain amino acids, like glutamine and leucine, induce an anabolic response in liver. They activate p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6K) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) involved in protein and fatty acids synthesis, respectively. In contrast, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which senses the energy state of the cell and becomes activated under metabolic stress, inactivates by phosphorylation key enzymes in biosynthetic pathways thereby conserving ATP.

Liver metabolism is influenced by hormones and nutrients. Amino acids such as glutamine or leucine induce an anabolic response, which resembles that of insulin in muscle and adipose tissue. In this work, the signalling pathways and the effects of insulin were compared to those of glutamine and leucine in isolated hepatocytes from normal and streptozotocin-diabetic rats.

Immunoblotting analyses revealed the presence of carb-oxylesterase in theporcine small intestine, liver, submaxillary andparotidglands, kidney cortex, lungs and cerebral cortex. In the intestinal mucosa, the pI 5.1 enzyme was detected in several subcellular fractions including the microvillar frac-tion. Both fatty monoacylated and diacylated monomeric (F1), trimeric (F3) and tetrameric (F4) forms of the intestinal protein were puri®ed here for the ®rst time by performing hydrophobic chromatography and gel ®ltration....

Triacylglycerols secreted by liver and carried by very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) are hydrolysed in circulation by lipoprotein and hepatic lipases. These enzymes have been shown to have positional and fatty acid specificityin vitro. If there were specificity in basal lipolysisin vivo, triacylglycerol compositionsofcirculatingandnewlysecretedVLDLwould be different. To study this we compared the composition of normal fasting VLDL triacylglycerol of Wistar rats to that obtained after blocking lipolysis by Triton WR1339, which increasedplasmaVLDL triacylglycerol concentrationabout 4.

It is known that phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) contains abundant arachidonate and is composed mainly of 1-stea-royl-2-arachidonoyl species in mammals. We investigated if this characteristic of PtdIns applies to the PtdIns from yellowtail (Seriolaquinqueradiata),amarinefish. Incommon with phosphatidylcholine (PtdCho),phosphatidylethanol-amine (PtdEtn) andphosphatidylserine (PtdSer) frombrain, heart, liver, spleen, kidney and ovary, the predominant polyunsaturated fatty acid was docosahexaenoic acid, and levels of arachidonic acid were less than 4.5% (PtdCho), 7.5%(PtdEtn) and3.

Recent studies have suggested that parts of the hepatic activities of diacylglycerol acyltransferase and acyl choles-terol acyltransferase are expressed in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). However the ER membrane is impermeable to the long-chain fatty acyl-CoA substrates of these enzymes.

Mitochondrialb-oxidation is a complex pathway involving, in the case of saturated straight chain fatty acids of even carbonnumber, at least 16proteinswhichare organized into two functional subdomains; one associated with the inner face of the inner mitochondrial membrane and the other in the matrix. Overall, the pathway is subject to intramito-chondrial control at multiple sites. However, at least in the liver, carnitine palmitoyl transferase I exerts approximately 80% of control over pathway flux under normal conditions....

Fatty acid-binding protein type 1 (FABP1), commonly termed liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP), is encoded by a single gene in mam-mals. We cloned and sequenced cDNAs for two distinct FABP1s in zebra-fish coded by genes designatedfabp1a andfabp1b. The zebrafish proteins, FABP1a and FABP1b, show highest sequence identity and similarity to the human protein FABP1.

Hepatic apoptosis is elevated in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and is correlated with the severity of the disease. Long-chain saturated fatty acids, such as palmitate, induce apoptosis in liver cells. The present study examined adiponectin-mediated protection against saturated fatty acid-induced apoptosis in the human hepatoma cell line, HepG2.

Apolipoprotein E (apoE) mediates the efficient catabolism of the chylomicron remnants very low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipo-protein from the circulation, and thede novo biogenesis of high-density lipoprotein. Lipid-bound apoE is the natural ligand for the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLr), LDLr-related protein 1 and other scavenger receptors.
