This research was undertaken to determine the concentrations of heavy metal ions in the surface water and sediment in water bodies that receive wastewater from the Dinh Tram and Pho Noi A industrial zones. The pollution status of the heavy metal ions and their potential ecological risks were evaluated by using the potential ecological risk index (RI) and risk assessment code (RAC).

This Master's thesis aims to document the research process into the synthesis of 2D AlPO4 via a liquid metal synthesis pathway. The synthesised 2D AlPO4 will then undergo qualitative and structural analysis, after which it will be characterised via advanced techniques to determine piezoelectric characteristics, as well as the exploration of the ability of the synthesised material to absorb heavy metals.

As the urban area has high population density and intensive anthropogenic activities, there are a great number of sources of heavy metals in cities, placing a considerable influence on human health. Emissions of heavy metals may come from domestic waste, chemical industry and transportation. These emissions have been continuously adding heavy metals to soils and they will remain present for many years even after the pollution sources have been removed.

The signaling properties of the gasotransmitter molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is endogenously generated in plant cells, are mainly observed during persulfidation, a protein post-translational modification (PTM) that affects redox-sensitive cysteine residues. There is growing experimental evidence that H2S in higher plants may function as a mechanism of response to environmental stress conditions.

Bioremediation presents a potentially low cost and environmentally agreeable alternative to current physico-chemical remediation strategies. However, heavy metals such as mercury cannot be converted into non-toxic forms by naturally occurring bacteria. Annual global emissions estimates for mercury released into the environment are in the thousands of tons per year [1,2] while the remediation cost is in the thousands of dollars per pound. Finding new bioremediation technologies is an urgent need.

Molybdenum insertion into the dithiolene group on the 6-alkyl side-chain of molybdopterin is a highly specific process that is catalysed by the MoeA and MogA proteins in Escherichia coli. Ligation of molybdate to molybdopterin generates the molybdenum cofactor, which can be inserted directly into molybdoenzymes binding the molybdopterin form of the molybdenum cofactor,

The mechanism of ATP hydrolysis of a shortened variant of the heavy metal-translocating P-type ATPase CopB ofSulfolobus solfataricus was studied. The catalytic fragment, named CopB-B, comprises the nucleotide binding and phosphorylation domains. We demonstrated stoichiometric high-affinity binding of one nucleotide to the protein (Kdiss 1–20lm). Mg is not necessary for nucleotide association but is essential for the phospha-tase activity.

TheSaccharomyces cerevisiae vacuolar ATP-binding cassette transporter Ycf1p is involved in heavy metal detoxification by mediating the ATP-dependent transport of glutathione–metal conjugates to the vacuole. In the case of selenite toxicity, deletion of YCF1was shown to confer increased resistance, rather than sensitivity
