Dendrimeric peptides selective for microbial surfaces have been developed to achieve broad antimicrobial activity and low hemolytic activity to human erythrocytes. The dendrimeric core is an asymmetric lysine branching tethered with two to eight copies of a tetrapeptide (R4) or an octapeptide (R8). The R4 tetrapeptide (RLYR) contains a putative microbial surface recognition BHHB motif (B ¼ basic, H ¼ hydrophobic amino acid) found in protegrins and tachyplesins whereas the octapeptide R8 (RLYRKVYG) consists of an R4 and a degenerated R4 repeat....

The nature of cGMP transport in human erythrocytes, its relationship to glutathione conjugate transport, and pos-sible mediation by multidrug resistance-associated proteins (MRPs) have been investigated. MRP1, MRP4 and MRP5 are detected in immunoblotting studies with erythrocytes. MRP1and MRP5 are also detected in multidrug resistant COR-L23/R and MOR/R cells but at greatly reduced levels in the parent, drug sensitive COR-L23/P cells. MRP4 is detected in MOR/R but not COR-L23/R cells.

This article is devoted to the study of redundancy and yield of salvage pathways in human erythrocytes. These cells are not able to synthesize ATPde novo. However, the salvage (recycling) of certain nucleosides or bases to give nucleotide triphosphates is operative. As the salvage pathways use enzymes consuming ATP as well as enzymes producing ATP, it is not easy to see whether a net synthesis of ATP is possible. As for pathways using adenosine, a straightforward assumption is that these pathways start with adenosine kinase....

cGMP secretion from cells can be mediated by ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters ABCC4, ABCC5, and ABCC11. Indirect evidence sug-gests that ABCC4 and ABCC5 contribute to cGMP transport by erythro-cytes. We have re-investigated the issue using erythrocytes from wild-type and transporter knockout mice.

Hemoglobin is the most prominent protein in blood, transporting O2 and facilitating reactive oxygen and nitrogen species detoxification. Hemoglobin metabolism leads to the release of extra-erythrocytic hemoglobin, with potentially severe consequences for health. Extra-erythrocytic hemoglobin is complexed to haptoglobin for clearance by tissue macrophages.

Glutathione (GSH) is an intracellular antioxidant synthesized from gluta-mate, cysteine and glycine. The human erythrocyte (red blood cell, RBC) requires a continuous supply of glutamate to prevent the limitation of GSH synthesis in the presence of sufficient cysteine, but the RBC membrane is almost impermeable to glutamate.
