Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), especially those with complications, requires lifelong care and incurs substantial expenses. In order to reduce out-of-pocket costs borne by patients, understanding costs including direct non-medical cost is important. This study aims to examine direct non-medical cost and related factors among T2DM with complications.

This atlas provides medical, dental and biology students with an outstanding collection of histology images for all of the major tissues and organs. Microscope slides are shown as a series of high-resolution photographs of the same area at successively increasing magnifications to provide a sense of scale and proportion. This is exactly the way students examine specimens through an actual microscope. Each image is labeled with details a student should be able to recognize. Each chapter is prefaced with introductory text.

The overall aim of this study is to determine the most effective way to reduce the radiation dose to the breast during non-breast related CT scans, whilst still maintaining a suitable image quality. This study will attempt to compare the doses and noise of various protocols that can be used for dose reduction, including tube current modulation, bismuth breast shields and manual reduction of tube current.

Shikimate kinase was chosen as a convenient representative example of the subclass of a/b proteins with which to examine the mechanism of protein folding. In this paper we report on the refolding of the enzyme after denaturation in urea. As shown by the changes in secondary and tertiary structure monitored by far UV circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence, respectively, the enzyme was fully unfolded in 4 M urea. From an analysis of the unfolding curve in terms of the two-state model, the stability of the folded state could be estimated as 17 kJÆmol)1.

To examine functions of two small heat shock proteins of Escherichia coli, IbpA and IbpB, we constructed His–IbpA and His–IbpB, in which a polyhistidine tag was fused to the N-terminals. Both purified His–IbpA and His–IbpB formed multimers, which have molecular masses of about 2.0– 3.0 MDa and consist of about 100–150 subunits.

To search for novel regulatory regions, we examined the features of chromatin structure in the rat B29/Ig-b gene and its flanking regions by determining DNase I hypersensitive sites (DHS) in plasmacytoma-derived Y3 cells. Six Y3 cellspecific DHS were detected at )8.6, promoter, +0.7, +4.4, +6.0, and +8.7 kb. The DHS at +4.4, +6.0, and +8.7 kb were present in the intergenic region between B29/Ig-b and growth hormone (GH) genes and were mapped inside conserved sequences in rat and humans.

Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) deficiency results in decreased retinol utilization, but it is unclear what physio-logical roles the several known ADHs play in retinoid signaling. Here, Adh1, Adh3,andAdh4null mutant mice have been examined following acute and chronic vitamin A excess. Following an acute dose of retinol (50 mgÆkg )1 ), metabolism of retinol to retinoic acid in liver was reduced 10-fold inAdh1mutants and 3.8-fold inAdh3mutants, but was not significantly reduced inAdh4mutants.

The promoter of the early growth response gene (Egr-1) has been described to be activated by ionizing radiation, and it seems to be clear that this process involves dierent mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinases, dependent on the speci®c cell type examined. However, early steps leading to activation of the corresponding pathways and thus to overexpression of Egr-1 are not well understood.

Previous structural andmutagenesis studies indicate that the invariant a-amino and a-carboxyl groups of glutamate receptor agonists are engaged in polar interactions with oppositely charged, conserved arginine and glutamate resi-dues in the ligand-binding domain ofa-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor. To examine the role of these residues (R507 and E727 in the GluR-D subunit) in the discrimination between agonists and anta-gonists, we analyzed the ligand-binding properties of homomeric GluR-D and its soluble ligand-binding domain withmutations at thesepositions....

Baculoviruses are well known for their large, circular, dou-ble-stranded DNA genomes. The type member, AcMNPV, is the best characterized andundergoes a successionof early, late and very late gene expression during its infection cycle. The viral genes involved inDNAreplicationhave previously been identified and their products are required for the acti-vation of late gene expression.
