Memory Model

This project examines how the moving image can be used as a vehicle of memory, to express what is lost, what is gained and what changes occur in relation to personal family migratory history—a messy and ambiguous process. This practice-led research project investigates video work, using filmed materials and objects, to focus attention on the non-linear aspect of time as it is subjected to individual and collective memories. The outcomes highlight the sometimes disconnecting and unpredictable experiences of migration, storytelling, and memory.

This thesis aimed to identify the approaches with the most academic impact and to explain them in greater detail. Hence, models of each category were chosen and compared. The non-parametric models were represented by the historical simulation, the parametric models by GARCH-type models (GARCH, RiskMetrics, IGARCH, FIGARCH, GJR, APARCH and EGARCH) and the semi-parametric models by the Monte Carlo simulation. The functional principle of each approach was explained, compared and contrasted.

Prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) is a proline-specific oligopepti-dase with a reported effect on learning and memory in dif-ferent rat model systems. Using the astroglioma cell line U343,PEP expression was reduced by an antisense technique. Measuring different second-messenger concen-trations revealed an inverse correlation between inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate [Ins(1,4,5)P3] concentration and PEP expression in the generated antisense cell lines. However,no effect on cAMP generation was observed.

A decade ago, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) was iden-tified as ana-secretase and as a key proteinase in the processing of the amy-loid precursor protein. Accordingly, the important role that it plays in Alzheimer’s disease was manifested. Animal models with an overexpression of ADAM10 revealed a beneficial profile of the metalloproteinase with respect to learning and memory, plaque load and synaptogenesis.
