Survival probability

The impacts of fund mergers and liquidations are significant as the managed funds industry continues to evolve. This thesis fills a much needed gap in the managed funds literature through providing insight into causes and implications of mergers and liquidation of managed funds. The thesis explores this through a number of aspects. Firstly, the thesis develops a framework for conceptualising the causes of managed funds termination and describes the differences between strategic mergers, distressed mergers and liquidations.

Cause-specific survival is commonly estimated in cancer clinical trials and only those deaths which can be attributed to the cancer in question are considered to be events, while all other deaths are considered censorings. Using cause-specific survival to estimate net survival requires that reliably coded information on cause of death is available. The distinguishing feature of survival analysis is that at the end of the follow-up period the event (such as death due to cancer) will probably not have occurred for all patients.

Myelodysplasia: Treatment The therapy of MDS has been unsatisfactory. Only stem cell transplantation offers cure: survival rates of 50% at 3 years have been reported, but older patients are particularly prone to develop treatment-related mortality and morbidity. Results of transplant using matched unrelated donors are comparable, although most series contain younger and more highly selected cases.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation This is the best therapy for the young patient with a fully histocompatible sibling donor (Chap. 108). Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing should be ordered as soon as the diagnosis of aplastic anemia is established in a child or younger adult. In transplant candidates, transfusion of blood from family members should be avoided so as to prevent sensitization to histocompatibility antigens; while transfusions in general should be minimized, limited numbers of blood products probably do not seriously affect outcome.
