Up to the early 1960s, passenger traffic through even the world’s largest airport was so small. There are economies of scale on the use of fixed equipment such as baggage systems and check-in decks and with movable apron equipment. Similar economies are found with airport authority, airline, and airport tenants’staff requirements.

Regulators of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins modulate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling networks by terminating signals produced by active Gα subunits. RGS17, a member of the RZ subfamily of RGS proteins, is typically only expressed in appreciable amounts in the human central nervous system, but previous works have shown that RGS17 expression is selectively upregulated in a number of malignancies, including lung, breast, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Mice expressing a C-terminal fragment of the prion protein instead of wild-type prion protein die from massive neuronal degeneration within weeks of birth. The C-terminal region of PrPc (PrP121–231) expressed in these mice has an intrinsic neurotoxicity to cultured neurones. Unlike PrPSc, which is not neurotoxic to neurones lacking PrPc expression, PrP121–231 was more neurotoxic to PrPc-deficient cells. Human mutations E200K and F198S were found to enhance toxicity of PrP121–231 to PrP-knockout neurones and E200K enhanced toxicity to wild-type neurones.

BTG/Tob family proteins, which are characterized by similarities in their N-terminal BTG/Tob homology domains, control cell growth negatively. Among the BTG/ Tob family members, BTG2/TIS21/PC3 proteins have been reported to have short lives and to be degraded by the proteasome. However, the mechanisms regulating the stabilities of other BTG/Tob family proteins have not yet been clarified.

A gene having high sequence homology (45–49%) with the glycerol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase gene from Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was cloned from the aerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon Aeropyrum pernix K1 (JCM 9820). This gene expressed in Escherichia coli with the pET vector system consists of 1113 nucleotides with an ATG initiation codon and a TAG termination codon. The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 38 kDa by SDS/PAGE and 72.4 kDa by gel column chromatography, indicating presence as a dimer....

Binding of lamin B receptor (LBR) to chromatin was studied by means of an in vitro assay system involving recombinant fragments of human LBR and Xenopus sperm chromatin. Glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-fused proteins including LBR fragments containing the N-terminal region (residues 1–53) and arginine-serine repeat-containing region (residues 54–89) bound to chromatin. The binding of GST-fusion proteins incorporating the N-terminal and arginine-serine repeat-containing regions to chromatin was suppressed by mild trypsinization of the chromatin and by pretreatment with a DNA solution....

Plant cell wall proteins called expansins are thought to disrupt hydrogen bonding between cell wall polysaccha-rides without hydrolyzing them. We describe here a novel gene with sequence similarity to plant expansins, isolated from the cellulolytic fungus Trichoderma reesei. The pro-tein named swollenin has an N-terminal fungal type cel-lulose binding domain connected by a linker region to the expansin-like domain.

We have identified and characterized a thermostable thio-redoxin system in the aerobic hyperthermophilic archaeon AeropyrumpernixK1. Thegene (Accessionno.APE0641) of A. pernixencoding a 37 kDaprotein contains a redox active site motif (CPHC) but its N-terminal extension region (about 200 residues) shows no homologywithin the genome database. A second gene (Accession no. APE1061) has high homology to thioredoxin reductase and encodes a 37 kDa protein with the active site motif (CSVC), and binding sites forFADandNADPH....

A high-affinity monoclonal antibody (M27), raised against the human thrombin–antithrombin complex, has been identifiedand characterized. The epitope recognizedbyM27 was located to the linear sequence FIREVP (residues 411– 416), located in the C-terminal cleavage peptide of anti-thrombin.This regionoverlaps, by two residues, theputative binding site of antithrombin for the serpin–enzyme complex receptor.

The lysine-binding-site-mediated interaction between plas-min and antiplasmin is of great importance for the fast rate of this reaction. It also plays an important part in regulat-ing the fibrinolytic enzyme system. To identify structures important for its noncovalent interaction with plasmin, we constructed seven single-site mutants of antiplasmin by modifying charged amino acids in theC-terminal part of the molecule.

The induction of the heat shock response as well as its termination is auto-regulated by heat shock protein activities. In this study we have investi-gated whether Hsp90 functional protein levels influence the characteristics and duration of the heat shock response. Treatment of cells with several benzoquinone ansamycin inhibitors of Hsp90 (geldanamycin, herbimycin A) activated a heat shock response in the absence of heat shock, as reported previously.

The COP9 signalosome (CSN) occurs in all eukaryotic cells. It is a regula-tory particle of the ubiquitin (Ub)⁄26S proteasome system. The eight sub-units of the CSN possess sequence homologies with the polypeptides of the 26S proteasome lid complex and just like the lid, the CSN consists of six subunits with PCI (proteasome, COP9 signalosome, initiation factor 3) domains and two components with MPN (Mpr-Pad1-N-terminal) domains.

AcmA, the major autolysin ofLactococcus lactisMG1363 is a modular protein consisting of an N-terminal active site domain and a C-terminal peptidoglycan-binding domain. The active site domain is homologous to that of muramidase-2 of Enterococcus hirae, however, RP-HPLC analysis of muropeptides released fromBacillus subtilispeptidoglycan, after diges-tion with AcmA, shows that AcmA is an N-acetylglucosaminidase.

Ribonuclease L (RNase L) is a key enzyme in the 2-5A host defense system, and its activity is strictly regulated by an unusual 2¢,5¢-linked oligoadenylate (2-5A).A bipartite model, in which the N-terminal half of RNase L is responsible for the 2-5A binding and the C-terminal half alone is able to hydrolyse the substrate RNA, has been proposed on the basis of the results of deletion mutant analyses [Dong, B.& Silverman, R.H.

Collectins are a family of collagenous calcium-dependent defense lectins in animals. Their polypeptide chains consist of four regions: a cysteine-rich N-terminal domain,a colla-gen-like region,ana-helical coiled-coil neck domain and a C-terminal lectin or carbohydrate-recognition domain. These polypeptide chains form trimers that may assemble into larger oligomers. The best studied family members are the mannan-binding lectin, which is secreted into the blood by the liver, and the surfactant proteins A andD,which are secreted into the pulmonary alveolar and airway lining fluid....

NEDD8 is a ubiquitin-like protein that controls vital bio-logical events through its conjugation to target proteins. Previously, we identifieda negative regulator oftheNEDD8 conjugation system, NEDD8 ultimate buster-1 (NUB1), that recruits NEDD8 and its conjugates to the proteasome for degradation. Recently, we performed yeast two-hybrid screening with NUB1 as bait and isolated a ubiquitin pre-cursor UbC1 that is composed ofnine tandem repeats of a ubiquitin unit through a-peptide bonds.

The hypothesis thatL-glutamate (Glu) is an excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system is now gaining more support after the suc-cessful cloning of a number of genes coding for the signaling machinery required for this neurocrine at synapses in the brain. These include Glu receptors (signal detection), Glu transporters (signal termination) and vesicular Glu trans-porters (signal output through exocytotic release).
