Zinc oxide
-
Zinc oxide is highly sought after for several applications in biology, optoelectronics, electronics, and sensing. Zinc oxide nanorods exhibit a high exciton binding energy and a wide direct band gap, making them an attractive material for ultraviolet optoelectronic devices in the compound semiconductor field.

This study investigated the in vitro effects of ZnO NP and chemical UV filters commonly used sunscreens on the function of immortalised and primary skin cells. ZnO particulates (30 nm, 80 nm and 200 nm) were compared to the chemical UV filters: butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM) ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate (EHMC), ethylhexylsalicylate (EHS), homomenthylsalicylate (HMS) and 4-methylbenzylidenecamphor (MBC). Human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK), epidermal melanocytes (NHEM), dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and the immortalised keratinocyte HaCaT cell line were used in this study.

To investigate the changes in the haematological, serum biochemical parameters and hepato-renal biomarkers upon dietary supplementation of nano zinc oxide (nZnO) and its effect on growth performance in calves, 24 weaned (6 months age) crossbred calves were randomly distributed to four dietary plans (Control, Treatment1, Treatment2 and Treatment3). The Control(C) group was fed exclusively with basal diet; T1 was supplemented with 25ppm ZnSo4, T2 and T3 with 5ppm and 10ppm nZnO respectively, along with the basal diet. Zinc content in basal was 26.24ppm.

Zinc is used as an anti-gingivitis agent in oral care products and affects multiple targets in oral bacteria. We found that it acts also to suppress respiration of oral streptococci and of Fusobacterium nucleatum, an organism associated with development of gingivitis.

The solution structure of homodimeric Cu2Zn2superoxide dismutase (SOD) of 306 aminoacids was determined on a 13 C, 15N and 70% 2 H labeled sample. Two-thousand eight-hundred and ®ve meaningful NOEs were used, of which 96 intersubunit, and115dihedral angles provideda familyof 30 conformers with an rmsd from the average of 0.78 0.11 and 1.15 0.09 A Ê for the backbone and heavy atoms, respectively.

An RBCC (RING finger, B-box, and coiled-coil) protein was identified that belongs to the superfamilyof zinc-binding proteins and is specifically expressed in the gill of eel, Anguilla japonica. Euryhaline fishes such as eels canmigrate between freshwater and seawater, which is considered to be accomplished by efficient remodeling of the architecture and function of the gill, a major osmoregulatory organ.

Thec-secretase complex mediates the final proteolytic event in Alzheimer’s disease amyloid-bbiogenesis. This membrane complex of presenilin, ante-rior pharynx defective, nicastrin, and presenilin enhancer-2 cleaves the C-terminal 99-amino acid fragment of the amyloid precursor protein intra-membranously atc-sites to form C-terminally heterogeneous amyloid-b and cleaves at ane-site to release the intracellular domain or e-C-terminal fragment.

During adipocyte differentiation, there is an underlying complex series of gene expressions. We have previously isolated many genes whose expres-sion levels are quickly elevated by the addition of inducers to mouse 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cells. Here we report the isolation and characterization of SLC39A14, a member of the LZT proteins, one of the subfamilies of ZIP transporters.

As an essential element, selenium is present in enzymes from several families, including glutathione peroxidases, and is thought to exert anticarcinogenic properties. A remarkable feature of selenium consists of its ability to oxidize thiols under reducing conditions. Thus, one mode of action recently suggested is the oxidation of thiol groups of metal-lothionein, thereby providing zinc for essential reactions.

Metallothioneins (MTs) release boundmetalswhen exposed to nitric oxide. At inflammatory sites, both metallothionein and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are induced by the same factors and the zinc released from metallothionein by NO suppresses both the induction and activity of iNOS.

Oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, hyperglycemia-induced glycations and environmental exposures increase the cellular concentrations of aldehydes. A novel aspect of the molecular actions of aldehydes, e.g. acetaldehyde and acrolein, is their reaction with the cysteine ligands of zinc sites in proteins and concomitant zinc release.

The zinc-finger cellular nucleic acid binding protein (CNBP) is a strikingly conserved single-stranded nucleic acid binding protein essential for normal forebrain formation during mouse and chick embryogenesis. CNBP cDNAs from a number of vertebrates have been cloned and analysed. CNBP is mainly conformed by seven retroviral Cys-Cys-His-Cys zinc-knuckles and a glycine⁄arginine rich region box.

It has been demonstrated that the plasma membrane expression of ZIP1 is regulated by endocytic mechanisms. In the zinc-replete condition, the level of surface expressed ZIP1 is low due to the rapid internalization of ZIP1. The present study aimed to identify a sorting signal(s) in ZIP1 that medi-ated endocytosis of ZIP1.

PARP-like zinc fingers (zf-PARPs) are protein domains apt to the recogni-tion of multiple DNA secondary structures. They were initially described as the DNA-binding, nick-sensor domains of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerases (PARPs). It now appears that zf-PARPs are evolutionary conserved in the eukaryotic lineage and associated with various enzymes implicated in nucleic acid transactions.

Major yolk protein (MYP), a transferrin superfamily protein that forms yolk granules in sea urchin eggs, is also contained in the coelomic fluid and nutritive phagocytes of the gonad in both sexes. MYP in the coelo-mic fluid (CFMYP; 180 kDa) has a higher molecular mass than MYP in eggs (EGMYP; 170 kDa).

Ecotropic viral integration site 1(EVI1) plays important roles in leukaemia and development, and its expression is temporally and spatially highly restricted during the latter process. Nevertheless, the only physiological agent that to date has been shown to regulate transcription of this gene in mammalian cells is all-trans retinoic acid.

The enzyme a-amino-b-carboxymuconate-e-semialdehyde decarboxylase (ACMSD) is a zinc-dependent amidohydrolase that participates in picolinic acid (PA), quinolinic acid (QA) and NAD homeostasis. Indeed, the enzyme stands at a branch point of the tryptophan to NAD pathway, and deter-mines the final fate of the amino acid, i.e. transformation into PA, com-plete oxidation through the citric acid cycle, or conversion into NAD through QA synthesis.

Proteins adsorbed on nanoparticles (NPs) are being used as biosensors and in drug delivery. However, our understanding of the effect of NPs on the structure of proteins is still in a nascent state. In this work we report the unfolding behavior of the periplasmic domain of the ToxR protein (ToxRp) of Vibrio choleraeon zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with a diam-eter of 2.5 nm.
