Camellia megasepala Hung T. Chang & Trin Ninh, found in Na Hang district, Tuyen Quang province, contains a significant amount of flavonoids and polyphenols, which are important phenolic compounds known for their various biological activities beneficial to human health, including antibacterial and antiinflammatory effects. This study applied the response surface methodology (RSM) to examine the influence of extraction factors on the polyphenol and flavonoid content in golden tea leaves.

FtsZ is conserved in almost all bacteria and is an essential protein for bacterial cell division. The cell division is prevented by the inhibitors against FtsZ’s functions. Thus, FtsZ is known as an attractive, and underexploited novel antibacterial target protein. The aim of this research is searching for new antibacterial agents from 72 plants collected in Central Vietnam.

Members of the proline-rich antibacterial peptide family, pyrrhocoricin, apidaecin and drosocin appear to kill responsive bacterial species by binding to themultihelical lid region of the bacterial DnaK protein.Pyrrhocoricin, the most potent among these peptides, is nontoxic to healthy mice, andcanprotect these animals frombacterial challenge.

Microcin J25 (MccJ25) is the single macrocyclic antimicro-bial peptidebelonging to the ribosomally synthesizedclass of microcins that are secreted byEnterobacteriaceae.Itshowed potent antibacterial activity against severalSalmonellaand Escherichiastrains and exhibited a compact three-dimen-sional structure [Blondet al. (2001) Eur. J. Biochem., 268, 2124–2133]. The molecular mechanisms involved in the biosynthesis, folding andmode of action of MccJ25 are still unknown.

Peptides composed of leucyl and lysyl residues (LK pep-tides) with different compositions and sequences were compared for their antibacterial activities usingcell wall-less bacteria of the classMollicutes(acholeplasmas, mycoplas-mas and spiroplasmas) as targets. The antibacterial activity of the amphipathica-helical peptides varied with their size, 15 residues beingthe optimal length, independent of the membrane hydrophobic core thickness and the amount of cholesterol.

Cationic antimicrobial peptides are naturally occurring antibiotics that are actively being explored as a new class of anti-infective agents. We recently identified three cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides from chicken, which have potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial activitiesin vitro (Xiao Y, Cai Y, Bommineni YR, Fernando SC, Prakash O, Gilliland SE & Zhang G (2006)J Biol Chem281, 2858–2867).

Antimicrobial peptides are effector molecules of the innate immune system. We have recently shown that peptides containing multiples of the heparin-binding Cardin and Weintraub motifs AKKARA and ARKKAAKA exert antimicrobial activities. Here, we show that replacement of lysine and arginine in these motifs by histidine abrogates the antibacterial effects of these peptides.

Cathelicidins are an important family of cationic host defense peptides in vertebrates with both antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. Fowlicidin-1 and fowlicidin-2 are two newly identified chicken cathelicidins with potent antibacterial activities. Here we report structural and func-tional characterization of the putatively mature form of the third chicken cathelicidin, fowlicidin-3, for exploration of its therapeutic potential.

Histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRGP), an abundant heparin-binding protein found in plasma and thrombocytes, exerts antibacterial effects against Gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalisand Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosa). Fluorescence studies and electron microscopy to assess membrane permea-tion showed that HRGP induces lysis of E.

Fish skin mucus contains a variety of antimicrobial proteins and peptides that seem to play a role in self defense. We previously reported an antibac-terial protein in the skin secretion of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, which showed selective antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to isolate and structurally and functionally characterize this protein.

The protein is also reported to have antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Eppin and its whey acid protein and Kunitz domains were expressed in Escherichia coliand their ability to inhibit proteases and kill bacteria compared.
