The aim of the thesis "Copreneurial sustainability: optimizing structures in small and medium U.S. enterprises" is to identify structures that support long-term sustainability of the copreneurial enterprise and its subsystems. To support the aim of the thesis, the following research question was derived from the literature review: What optimizing structures are created by copreneurs to achieve sustainability of both the business and the family?

Knema is a genus of tropical evergreen trees of the family Myristicaceae found in South East Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. In this paper, four lignans, (+)-pinoresinol (1),(+) epi-pinoresinol (2), piperitol (3), and pluviatilol (4), were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the fruit of Knema pachycarpa, an indigenus tree in Vietnam. The chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic data and comparison with the reported literature. These compounds were isolated from Knema genus for the first time.

2’,3’-Dideoxynucleosides (ddNs) are the most important class of compounds active against HIV/AIDS. They act as DNA chain terminators and competitive inhibitors of viral reverse transcriptase (RT). Currently, stavudine (d4T, Zerit) is one six drugs belonging to the ddNs family that are approved by the FDA. This article describes the synthesis of generic stavudine drug from thymidine in three steps. By mean of this synthesis, stavudine was obtained in a good yield. The structure of product and intermediate were established by NMR spectroscopies.

Angelica sinensis (OLiv.) Diels ("Danggui") belongs to the family Umbelliferae. Its rhizomes are reputed to have marked restorative, antianaemic and haemagogic properties. From ethyl acetate and butanol extracts of rhizomes of this plant 8 nitrogen-containing compounds (1-8) have been isolated. Their structures were elucidated by means of MS and NMR spectroscopic methods as 5-oxo-proline, 5-oxo-prolin-ethylester, nicotinamide, tryptophane, perlolidine, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-methyl- -carboline-3-carboxylic acide, adenosine and uridine.

The development of concept in structural morphology lets description the location of nickel nanoclusters in conductive organic polymers, which may be a new kind of structure in conductive organic polymer composites family. As a new route, such the development was supported by electrochemical two-pot process, on which polianiline containing nanoclusters of nickel incorporated in layer by layer were prepared, in H2SO4 0.1 M solutions. Mer belongs to the Tyro 3 family of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). Together with Axl and Rse, the three RTKs are believed to play important functional roles in the male gonads because gene knockout male mice lacking all of these receptors are infertile. In the present study, postnatal expression of Axl and Rse in mouse testes decreased during maturation while expression of Mer increased age-dependently during testicular development.

In this study we describe the isolation of three genes of the CYP11B family of the guinea pig. CYP11B1 codes for the previously described 11b-hydroxylase [Bulow, H.E., Mobius, ¨ ¨ K., Bahr, V. & Bernhardt, R. (1996) Biochem. Biophys. Res. ¨ Commun. 221, 304–312] while CYP11B2 represents the aldosterone synthase gene. As no expression for CYP11B3 was detected this gene might represent a pseudogene.

The design of b-glycosidases with planed substrate specificity for biotechnological application has received little attention. This is mostly a consequence of the lack of data on the molecular basis of the b-glycosidase specificity, namely data on the energy of the noncovalent interactions in the enzymetransition state complex. In an attempt to fill this gap, sitedirected mutagenesis and enzyme steady-state kinetic experiments with different substrates were conducted, using as model a digestive b-glycosidase (glycoside hydrolase family 1) from Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera) (Sfbgly50).

In the biosynthesis of the antiarrhythmic alkaloid ajmaline, polyneuridine aldehyde esterase (PNAE) catalyses a central reaction by transforming polyneuridine aldehyde into epivellosimine, which is the immediate precursor for the synthesis of the ajmalane skeleton. The PNAE cDNA was previously heterologously expressed in E. coli. Sequence alignments indicated that PNAE has a 43% identity to a hydroxynitrile lyase from Hevea brasiliensis, which is a member of the a/b hydrolase superfamily. The catalytic triad, which is typical for this family, is conserved.

The siglecs (sialic acid-binding Ig-like lectins) are a distinct subset of the Ig superfamily with adhesion-molecule-like structure. We describe here a novel member of the siglec protein family that shares a similar structure including five Ig-like domains, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic tail containing two ITIM-signaling motifs. Siglec10 was identified through database mining of an asthmatic eosinophil EST library. Using the Stanford G3 radiation hybrid panel we were able to localize the genomic sequence of siglec-10 within the cluster of genes on chromosome 19q13.

We report the biochemical characterization of calhepatin, a calcium-binding protein of the S100 family, isolated from lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa) liver. The primary structure, determined by Edman degradation and MS/MS, shows that the sequence identities with the other members of the family are lower than those between S100 proteins from different species. Calhepatin is composed of 75 residues and has a molecular mass of 8670 Da. It is smaller than calbindin D9k (78 residues), the smallest S100 described so far....

Strictosidine glucosidase (SG) is an enzyme that catalyses the second step in the biosynthesis of various classes of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. Based on the comparison of cDNA sequences of SG from Catharanthus roseus and raucaffricine glucosidase (RG) from Rauvolfia serpentina, primers for RT-PCR were designed and the cDNA encoding SG was cloned from R. serpentina cell suspension cultures. The active enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Analysis of its deduced amino-acid sequence assigned the SG from R. serpentina to family 1 of glycosyl hydrolases.

Expansins are a family of proteins that catalyze pHdependent long-term extension of isolated plant cell walls. They are divided into two groups, a and b, the latter consisting of the grass group I pollen allergens and their vegetative homologs. Expansins are suggested to mediate plant cell growth by interfering with either structural proteins or the polysaccharide network in the cell wall.
