  • In this study, we propose to build an equivalent 2D model to replace the 3D model of corrugated composite sheets, by the method of homogenization, to study the nonlinear mechanical behavior of corrugated core composite sheets. This model helps to significantly reduce the calculation time as well as the model building time. The model homogeneity is confirmed by comparing the numerical simulation results of the 2D model and the 3D model.

  • This paper describes an investigation of fluid flow through two tandem circular cylinders using Lattice-Boltzmann Method in direct numerical simulation. The diameter ratio of two circular cylinders, D1/D2 varies from 0.5 to 1.5, and spacing ratio (L/D2) varies from 1.5 to 10, whereas the Reynolds number of 100 is considered. The numerical model is well validated by comparing the results with those obtained in the literature.

  • This study utilized the GIS-based Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to simulate the flow of Vu Gia - Thu Bon river basin at two hydrological stations - Nong Son and Thanh My, during the calibration period (2004 - 2010) and the verification period (2011 - 2015). The evaluation results of both periods, as measured by the NSE and R2 indexes, were found to be above 0.75.

  • In this thesis, the rolling contact wear of 52100 bearing steel and Over-aged Magnesia-Partially-Stabilised Zirconia (OA-Mg-PSZ) ceramic are examined using a newly developed rolling contact wear test rig. The new wear test rig simulates the system geometry of an un-lubricated hybrid (ceramic and steel) ball bearing. The new wear test rig is versatile in that it allows low cost samples to be utilised resulting in a larger number of samples that can be tested.

  • This thesis investigates the SPH capability available in the commercial Finite Element (FE) code LS-DYNA®, for water impact problems. Experiments have been conducted on rigid wedges impacting water, which were then simulated with the SPH method. Although certain limitations were experienced with the experimental results, a positive correlation was observed with the numerical technique, thus establishing SPH as a promising method for crashworthiness design.

  • The objective of this research was to determine the role of neural feedback and muscle mechanics in the generation of physiological tremor oscillation. This research developed a neuromuscular model to simulate the individual and resulting oscillatory mechanisms of tremor. The oscillations found in EMG signal were also analysed empirically from EMG data from 54 subjects using Hilbert Transform and rectification to obtain the envelope of the signal. The time between rhythmical waveform patterns in the EMG signal, TC was found to be 78ms.

  • This research demonstrates how housing demand can be modelled by using a System Dynamics approach. This modelling concept has been set up, using the root causes which generate housing demand. Causal factors which influence housing demand are collated, and mapped. A model simulating housing demand was developed. Keys to this are demographic, social and economic factors. This model is presented with a view to pursuing new approaches for housing demand modelling.

  • Photoelasticity images of pulsed laser ablation in water and in air were simulated by Finite Element Method. In the paper "Compare transient stress induced in in-air and in-water laser ablation using simulation method", the Von Mises stress distribution in the target is deduced from the simulated images and is compared between the two-ablation regimes. The result confirms that pulse laser ablation in the water can induced a stress about 100 times higher than that induced in ablation in the air.

  • In this study, numerical simulations are conducted to mimic the instant and delayed seismic triggering observed after this event and evaluate resultant seismic cycle perturbations at adjacent faults and near İzmir, where amplified ground motions caused heavy damage. For this purpose, Coulomb static stress changes and seismic waveforms recorded by strong-motion stations are combined as static and dynamic triggers on a rate-and-state friction dependent quasi-dynamic spring slider model with shear-normal stress coupling.

  • This work presents results from a numerical investigation on the influence of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) on the dynamic response of thin steel plates subjected to blast loading. The loading was generated by a shock tube test facility designed to expose structures to blast-like loading conditions. The steel plates had an exposed area of 0.3 m × 0.3 m and experienced large deformations during the tests.

  • The Monte Carlo N-Particle code (MCNP4C2 version) has been modified for atomic relaxation in both source code and library to simulate XRF spectra for different measurement configurations. The modified code was then used to simulate XRF spectra of six metal samples: Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd, Ag, Au, and Au alloys on an XRF spectrometer. The results are compared to those of experimental measurements.

  • Software-defined networking (SDN) represents a new structure of computer network that simplifies and improves network management by splitting the control plane and data plane. Since SDN is regarded as a new research issue, the application of SDN in practice faces some barriers. Most network devices such as routers and switches that implement SDN functionalities are expensive. An alternative solution in SDN research and experiments is to use network emulators. By using Mininet, an open source network emulator, this study simulates SDN implementations in different environments.

  • In this paper we use a new method based on Einstein’s equation to calculate the diffusion coefficient of impurity atoms in the disorder systems. Simulation results show that the diffusion coefficient D obeys the Arrhenius law. The dependence of the diffusion coefficient D on temperature for regular disordered lattice is also examined and discussed.

  • In this paper, we describe the application of CRO algorithm to search optimal parameters for PID controller because CRO combines both features of local and global searching techniques to increase the chance of finding global solution. The comparison of tuning PID controller by CRO and traditional Ziegler-Nichols method is also presented. The simulated results show the advantages of tuning PID using CRO compared to traditional methods in terms of performance indices and transient responses.
