Mitotic chromosome structure depends on the chromosomal condensin complex. Without condensin, metaphase chromosomes remain undercondensed and lack structural stability. We have asked where along budding yeast chromosomes the condensin complex associates, and what we can learn from its binding pattern about the mechanism of chromosome condensation.
